Variable-speed epicyclic gearing is controlled automatically by flywheels k, k<1> which rotate with the gearing and are alternately accelerated and decelerated in consequence of relative speed between driving and driven elements a, c. The driving-element a with a disc d form a cage supporting planet gears e which mesh with a sun gear f fast on the shaft b of the driven pulley c. Cranks g, g<1> carried by the gears e engaged with cam slots h in the flywheels k, k<1>. The inertia of the flywheels resists relative motion within the gearing so as to yield an elastic variable drive. The slots h may be shaped so that energy passes to and fro between the flywheels. More than one pair of flywheels, or a single flywheel, may be used, and eccentrics may replace the cranks. According to the Provisional Specifications, the planetary cranks &c. may be connected to the flywheels by links.
