Abstract

195,167. Johnston, R. Dec. 28, 1921. Variable-speed epicyclic gearing comprises bevel gearing and a special clutch for obtaining a solid drive. Planet gears 5, 6, 7 upon a spider 8 fast upon the driven shaft 3 mesh with a sun gear 1 on the driving-shaft 2 and with sun gears 12, 15, 18, 21, 24 which are adapted to be enclosed alternatively by suitable brakes 30. The clutch comprises a band 25 of spring steel, which expands into contact with two brake-drums 13, 16, simultaneously, so as to lock the parts together. It may be supported by springs 33 from a loose disc 19. The clutch is thrown out of action by compressing it between a pair of fixed arms 26 which can be drawn together by a screw 27. The extended arms of the spider 8 carry a brake drum 9.
