Abstract

204,650. Johnston, R. March 10, 1923. No Patent granted (Sealing fee not paid). Variable-speed epicyclic gearing comprises stepped spur planet gears L, M supported on a carrier E secured to a driven shaft B. A sun gear D secured to a driving-shaft A meshes with the gears L. A sun gear F loose on the shaft B is adapted to be held by a brake applied to a drum H to effect reversed driving. Two reduced forward drives are obtained by holding internallytoothed gears N, P meshing with the gears L, M by brakes applied to drums O, Q. A solid high-speed drive is obtained by allowing a band R of spring steel to expand into engagement with the drums Q, H simultaneously as described in Specification 195,167. The band R is supported by springs S upon a loose ring T and is adapted to be disengaged by compressing it between a pair of fixed arms V which can be drawn together by a screw W. The clutch drive is rendered positive when the ends of the band R engage projections U, Fig. 3, inside the drums. The carrier E is extended to carry a drum E<1> for braking a vehicle &c. The driven shaft may be sleeved upon the driving-shaft.
