Abstract

201,722. Johnston, R. June 29, 1922. Variable-speed epicyclic gearing comprises a special clutch for obtaining a solid drive, and is similar to the invention described in Specification 195,167 except that the bevel gearing is replaced by spur gearing. The planet-carrier G is freely mounted between a sun-gear D secured to the driving-shaft A and a sun-gear E secured to the driven shaft B. Upon planet spindles Hare secured gears J, J<1> on one side of the carrier G and gears K, K<1> on the other side. The gears J, K mesh with the gears D, E respectively. The gears J<1>, K<1> mesh respectively with loose gears 0, L connected by sleeves to drums Q, N, which may be braked alternatively for effecting two .speeds. The carrier G itself carries a brake drum R, and a fourth drum S is secured to the shaft B. The clutch comprises a band T of spring steel, which expands into contact with two brake-drums N, S simultaneously, so as to lock the parts together. It may be supported by springs Y from a loose ring Z. The clutch is thrown out of action by compressing the band T between a pair of fixed arms U which can be drawn together by a screw X.
