Abstract
148,169. Develay, E. H. July 26, 1917, [Convention date]. Variable-speed epicyclic gearing. -A three-speed two-train gear has planet wheels 3, carried by a driving-element 1 meshing with a loose gear 10 and with a gear 4a having a drum 6 adapted to be stopped or retarded by a brake and also a ratchet clutch connexion 7 with a driven shaft 2. A carrier 3b of planet gears 3 of the second train is secured to the gear 10. The gears 3 mesh with a gear 5 secured to the shaft 2 and with a gear 4 having a drum 6 and ratchet clutch 7. The gearing normally turns solid, and increased speeds are obtained by holding the drums 6, 6 alternatively. Spur gearing may replace the bevel gearing. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes a single-train gear shown in Fig. 1 (Cancelled), which yields solid driving or an increased speed according as a drum 6 is free or is braked, a clutch 7 in the latter case overrunning. Also an arrangement with overlapping trains is shown in Fig. 3 (Cancelled). The carrier 1 of two sets of interengaging spur elements 3, 11 and 3, 11 drives, and speeds above the solid drive are obtained by braking drums 6, 6, a sun gear 5 on the shaft 2 being driven. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
