Abstract

126,208. Moore, Sir A. G. H. W., and Wilson, W. G. July 8, 1918. Compulsory differential driving; change-speed gearing. - T h e driving-shaft of an endless-track vehicle is fitted with compound epicyclic gears which operate the countershafts carrying the track-driving sprockets and can be braked to vary the speed of the countershafts relatively to each other and to their common driving-shaft. The engine shaft c drives a shaft b through a reversing-gear d, each end of the shaft b carrying a compound epicyclic gear, one gear-train comprising a sun-wheel g, planet pinions i mounted on a carrier on one of the sprocket-carrying countershafts a, and an internal gear k on a, brake-drum l. The second gear train comprises a carrier h carrying an internal gear meshing with planet pinions m on the brake-drum l, the planet pinions gearing with a sun-wheel n mounted on a loose sleeve carrying a second brakedrum o. By braking the drum l, the drive is through the sun-wheel g, pinions i, and carrier j. When the drum l is free and the second drum o is braked, the drive is through both sets of gears, thus giving a second speed ratio. In a modification, the planet pinions m are mounted on the outside of the brake-drum l and mesh with an internal gear on the second brake-drum o and with a sun-wheel on the shaft b.
