Abstract

20,593. Alltree, A. Sept. 10. [Cognate Application, 27,337/12.] Variable-speed epicyclic gearing for motorcycles &c., arranged to provide a solid top drive and two or more alternative speeds, is essentially characterized by a central flange A<1> integral with or secured to the outer hub or shell A, the flange being arranged between and forming a carrier for two sets of planet-pinions B, C. As shown in Fig. 1, the planet-pinions are in mesh with a single sun-pinion G provided with internal clutch dogs G' and with internal wheels E, F furnished with clutch dogs E<1>, F<1>; the driving-member I of the gear is connected to the pulley O<3> by a controllable friction clutch 0 and has clutch dogs I<1>, the gear being changed by the sliding of two clutch sleeves J, H along the axle. For the direct drive, the member I is connected by the sleeve J to both the sunwheel and the internal wheel E, as shown; movement of the clutch sleeves to the right locks the sun-pinion to a stationary clutch M and the internal wheel E alone to the driving-member, and movement of the sleeves to the left locks the sun-pinion to the driving - member and the internal wheel F to the stationary clutch. If desired, two sun-pinons may be used. In a modification having two sun-pinions, a single clutch sleeve with two sets of dogs is adapted to lock the first sun-pinion to the second internal wheel F for the top drive, and either one or the other sun-pinion or the second internal wheel to the fixed clutch to provide three lower speeds, the first internal wheel E being permanently the driving-member of the gear; with this arrangement, the second train may have interengaging planet-pinions, or the gear may be modified to provide means for locking the first sun-pinion to the member I and releasing the wheel E therefrom. The friction clutch O may be omitted or it may be arranged between the carrier A<1> and the hub shell. The gear may be mounted in a countershaft position in an extension of the crank casing, and may be driven from the engine by chain gearing or by spur or helical gear-wheels of which an intermediate wheel may be fixed on a starting-shaft. According to the first Provisional Specification, in an arrangement similar to that shown in Fig. 1, (1) clutch teeth are formed at each side of the sun-pinion and similar teeth upon an adjacent part of each internal wheel, (2) the driving-member I and stationary clutch M are slotted to accommodate the sliding clutch sleeves, (3) the clutch sleeve H may be replaced by a pin sliding in a slot in the axle, (4) two sun-pinions of different sizes and pinned together to turn as one piece may be used, and (5) a single sun-pinion gearing with one set of planet-pinions only may be employed. According to Provisional Specification 27,337/12, the carrier may be feathered to the hub shell.
