Abstract
4143. Guilford, P. G. Feb. 18. [Cognate Application, 7392/13.] Variable-speed epicyclic gearing for cycles, motor-cycles, &c., providing a direct drive and three lower-speeds, is characterized by the production of the second of the lower speeds by clutching the sun-pinion of the first train to the carrier of the second train when the sunpinion of this train is held stationary, the said carrier constituting the final driven member of the gear. The sun-pinions may each be mounted on the axle, or the pinion B<1> may be mounted on a sleeve of the pinion B, the sleeve being provided with means whereby it may be locked to the axle. The pinion B has a toothed flange f<1> for engaging with clutch teeth upon the carrier A<1> and, as shown, with teeth upon the carrier A; the flange may, however, be arranged to engage with either of two sets of teeth on the carrier A'. For the direct drive, the sunpinion B may be locked to the driving-member d<1>, or, as shown in Fig. 2, to the carrier A, this pinion B being also locked to the carrier A<1>, or, as shown, the second pinion B' being thus locked. For the first lower speed, the one or the other of the sun-pinions is locked to the axle, as by the engagement of teeth f<6> with teeth k<1>; for the second lower speed the first pinion B is clutched by teeth f<2>, g<3> to the second carrier, the second pinion B<1> being locked to the axle, and for the lowest speed both sunpinions are locked to the axle. Instead of using clutch teeth, the anchored member n<1> may carry pins adapted to engage holes in first the one pinion B<1> for the second and third speeds, and then both the sun-pinions for the fourth speed, the driving-member d<1> being provided with similar pins for engaging with the holes of the first sun-pinion B for direct line drive.
