Abstract
25,288. Alltree, A. Nov. 5. Variable-speed epicyclic gearing for motorcycles &c. Gearing, comprising a compound epicyclic train without annulus and a single epicyclic train with annulus, has the free-engine friction clutch A arranged in combination with the first or driving member B of the gear, the last element being directly secured to the hub shell. As shown in Fig. 1, the compound planetpinions D, D', mounted upon the driving- member, gear with a controllable sun-pinion E and with internal teeth upon the annulus G, H of the single train, the carrier J of which is fixed to the hub shell. For the direct drive, the sun-pinions engage dogs upon rotatable members such as the driving-member and the annulus; a lower speed is furnished by clutching the pinion L to the fixed clutch 0, and a still lower speed by then clutching the pinion E to the pinion L. By using each train separately, and then both together, the gear may, however, be arranged to provide four speeds. Moreover, the single train may be disposed adjacent to the driving-member of the hub, and the compound train adjacent to the driven member, the externally-toothed member with which the smaller of the compound pinions gear being fixed to the hub. The gear may be arranged upon a countershaft in an extension of the engine crank casing, and driven by chain or toothed gearing from the engine shaft. Specification 13,728/12 is referred to. According to the Provisional Specification, (1) when a single axle clutch is used it may be placed at either end of the gear or between the sunpinions, (2) a plate or other form of friction clutch, such as a single or double cone clutch, may be arranged in conjunction with either the driving or driven member of the gear, pin-andslot mechanism or quick-pitch screw mechanism on the axle or a rod within the axle being used to disengage the clutch elements, and (3) as a countershaft gear the mechanism may be arranged upon either a fixed or a rotatable axle.
