Abstract

13,728. Alltree, A. June 12. Variable speed epicyclic gearing. - I n motor - cycle changespeed gearing employing two epicyclic reducing- trains arranged to provide a direct top drive and two or more lower speeds, the clutch for holding either sunpinion or both s u npinions against rotation is anchored by an external plate or arm Y secured or connected to the clutch and bolted, clipped, or otherwise fixed to an adjacent frame member Z. The gear trains are arranged after the manner described in Specifications 25,893/10 and 26,192/11, but the sun-pinions are provided with adjacent clutch teeth k, l and are separated by a spring N, so that for the intermediate speed the sun-pinion K is brought into engagement with the fixed clutch B, and for the lowest speed the sun-pinion L is drawn further to the right to be locked to the pinion K which is still held stationary. When the clutch cannot be secured directly to the anchorplate, the axle may have a squared or flattened part for engagement by the plate. Rings D<1>, E<1>, carried by the planet-pinion studs, have internal clutch teeth to engage the respective sun-pinions in order to give the direct drive. A flat spring T<1> secured to the free - wheel sprocket T and gripping the axle prevents the sprocket from turning when the motor-cycle is running. According to the Provisional Specification (1) the free-engine clutch P may be arranged in combination with the driving-member or the driven member of the gear, (2) the stationary clutch may be disposed either at the driving or at the driven end of the gear and may be formed with internal teeth to accommodate the teeth of the sun-pinion, or may have teeth to engage teeth cut in the outer face of the sun-pinion, (3) the driving-member, the central carrier, or the driven member may have clutch teeth, with which the sun-pinion or either of them may engage, and (4) the fulcrum arm is preferably adjustable.
