23,704. Cordner, R. A. Nov. 22. Driving-mechanism.-Relates to a three-speed gear for cycles &c. in which two epicyclic trains are employed. In the one train, the planet pinions c mounted on the chain-wheel d, gear with an internal wheel b<2>, on the driving-wheel hub b, and with a dead wheel a<1>. In the second train, the planet pinions are mounted on the hub and the internal wheel d' is formed on a drum projecting from the chain-wheel and formed with slots to accommodate the pinions c. The dead wheel a<1> is formed on a sleeve a, movable endways on the axle g to engage the dead wheel with either set of pinions in its extreme positions, it is locked to the axle by a ring of internal teeth engaging one or other of the rings of teeth g', g<2> on the axle. In the intermediate position it is free of the axle but the wheel a is in engagement with both sets of planet pinions, the gear is then locked and the hub rotates at the same speed as the chain-wheel. In a modification, the chain-wheel is mounted on a centre-piece which carries the pinions and internal wheel, and the sleeve is moved by a rod which passes through the axle and engages with it by a pin passing through a slot. The chain-wheel may be fitted with a free-wheel clutch. Reference is made to Specifications No. 24,703, A.D. 1899, and No. 15,135, A.D. 1901.
