Abstract
27,757. Clough, J. Dec. 17. Driving-mechanism.-In change-speed gearing for motor and other bicycles, tricycles, &c., a worm sleeve B driven from the engine &c. engages a worm-wheel W<1> carried by a clutch disk C freely mounted upon the stationary axle, the changes of speed being effected by clutching the disk to the axle and to the hub or gear box H. A bevel-wheel D carried by the spindle W<2> or the wheel W<1>, gears with a wheel E also carried by the disk C, the wheel E being in gear with teeth F upon the hub. For clutching the disk to the hub, a ring R<1> keyed to the hub is pressed by a spring R into engagement with the coned periphery of the disk. For holding the disk stationary, a second disk &c. G, incapable of turning upon the axle, may be moved laterally by means of a screw-threaded sleeve J turned by suitable means, the projections or clutch cone G<1> being arranged to engage a corresponding recess C<2> in the disk C, while the part G<2> presses the ring R<1> out of engagement. In the middle position of the disk G-, the parts G', R<1> are both clear of the disk C, giving a free engine or free-wheel. In lieu of providing the spring R, the ring R<1> may be connected to the member G in such a way that it is moved both into and out of gear by the movement of the member. As shown, the gear -wheels W<1>, D, E are duplicated. To obtain a three-speed gear, the sleeve B is provided, preferably outside the hub, with a disk &c. carrying spur-wheels, which gear with a toothed extension of the hub and with a sun-wheel, freely mounted upon the driving-sleeve but capable of being held by a band brake &c. When driving through the spur-wheel train, the other mechanism is placed in the freewheel position. Intermediate wheels may be used in the train. According to the Provisional Specification, for the three-speed gear, the ring R<1> and the toothed ring F are connected to the hub by ratchet one-way clutches, and only one gear-wheel is provided between the sun-wheel and the hub extension.
