3881. Griffin, F. A. Feb. 16. Variable-speed gearing; clutches.-In a two-speed gear, more particularly for cycles and the like, of the type in which an internally-toothed ring H upon the driving-member gears with planet pinions F carried by the hub, for the high speed or direct drive, the sun pinion E is slid into engagement with positive clutch teeth G<1> upon a plate G, while in the low-speed position, backward rotation of the sun pinion is prevented by a one-way clutch B, D between a sleeve C and the spindle. The sleeve C is moved towards the right by means such as a wire attached to a pin C<1> and is returned to the lowspeed position by a spring K. To facilitate their sliding engagement, the opposed faces of the pawls B and the ratchet ring D may be bevelled; but, if desired, these one-way clutch members may be always in engagement.
