Abstract

9189. Griffin, F. A., and Lea & Francis. May 2. Variablespeed gearing ; clutches.-In a three-speed gear, particularly adapted for cycles &c., for the low speed, a sliding sun pinion A is brought into engagement with a fixed clutch member or ring of teeth G, as shown in Fig. 1, so that the hub is driven through a one. way clutch 0, a member F' with internal teeth F, planet pinions C, the carrier D, and a second one-way clutch K By sliding the sun pinion to engage teeth D<2> or other positive clutch upon the carrier D, the gear is locked and turns as a whole to give the normal or intermediate speed. For the high speed, the sun pinion is moved still farther to engage the teeth D' of a second planet pinion carrier D<3>, the pinions C' of which gear with a fixed pinion B, and as the pinion A is still in gear with its planet pinions and with the carrier D, the first epicyclic train turns as a whole and the hub is driven through the carrier D<3>, the pinions C<1>, and teeth upon a cylindrical part E' detachably secured to the hub. Ball bearings P, P<1> are provided between the carriers D, D<3> and the part E'. In order that the machine may be wheeled backwards, one-way clutches L, M are provided between the spindle and the parts B, G to allow the pinion and clutch member to turn in a direction opposite to the forward rotation of the hub. The part E<1> has dogs e to engage recesses in a ring h. According to the Provisional Specification, the clutch connexion between the pinion B and the spindle may comprise faces with ratchet teeth kept in engagement by a spring, while the part E<1> may screw into the hub.
