Variable - s p e e d epicyclic gearing.- In a variable-speed gear for cycles &c., of the kind described in Specification 9189/05, to obviate the use of a one - way clutch between the highspeed sun - pinion and the axle for permitting backwheeling of the machine, a one - way clutch r is provided between the second train and the hub. The carrier p may be mounted by a roller bearing upon the axle, and, instead of being arranged to engage internal teeth u, the sliding sunpinion n may carry pawls to engage external teeth upon the axle or ball race v. The gear is adjusted by screwing-up the ball race v so that the planetpinions o bear upon the axle nut z ; a part turn of the race in the reverse direction then gives the mechanism sufficient freedom.
