Variable-speed gearing.-A three-speed gear for the crank bracket of cycles, in which the low gear is obtained by back-pedalling, comprises a wheel R, Figs. 1 and 2, loosely mounted on the hub of the crank M with an interposed pawl-and-ratchet connection K, and planet pinions G, G<1>, P, of which at least one P has teeth engaging rollers 0, 0' on the wheel R and the sprocket ring C respectively, the axles 1 of the planet pinions being carried by rings D, D<1>, the peripheries of which are formed with ratchet teeth. On normal gear, a pawl F on the crank M drives the ring D<1>, and the parts rotate as a unit, the pawl K preventing rotation of the pinion P. On high gear, a pawl X is brought by a control rod T into engagement with a ratchet boss B on the wheel R, which is thus held stationary, the piston P rolling on it to increase the speed of the ring C. On low gear, the crank M is driven in the reverse direction, and a pawl V on the cycle frame holds the ring D and the axles 1 stationary, the wheel R being driven through the pawl K to rotate the pinion P, which drives the ring C at reduced speed.
