Abstract
235,649. Jardine, Sir E., and Cohen, I. March 21, 1924. Variable-speed gearing.-In a combined engine and three-speed gear unit for a motor-cycle, an intermediate shaft D carries a gear wheel G engaged by a pinion E<1> on the engine shaft E and gear wheels P, P<2> meshing with wheels Q - - Q<2> on a final driving shaft F. A sprocket wheel or pulley R loose on the shaft F can be connected to either of the wheels Q - - Q<2> by means of a clutch sleeve V sliding on splines T<1> on the sleeve T secured to the pulley and adapted to engage clutch members W, S<1>, F<1> on the gear wheels. The sleeve V may be actuated by the means described in Specification 162,550. The wheel G is connected to the shaft D by a plate clutch H which is held in engagement by springs J and can be disengaged by means of a lever L, arms L<1>, and rod K.
