Abstract
239,825. Amerigen, M. van. Sept. 15, 1924, [Convention date]. Variable-speed gearing.-In a motor-cycle engine a four-speed-gear is enclosed in a case attached to the crank case, only six-toothed wheels being used for the gearing and for the transmission from the crank to the drive shaft. The usual plate clutch 2 connects the engine crank. shaft 1 to a sleeve, on which is keyed a dog clutch 3. This engages either one of the wheels 4, 5 which are in mesh with the two integral wheels 6, 7, these wheels in turn mesh with wheels 9, 10 free on the driving shaft 11, but adapted to be coupled thereto by the sliding dog clutch 12. The two clutches are worked by a single lever 13, Fig. 3, through the rod 15; lateral movement of the rod carries with it the fork 16 and adjusts the clutch 3; rotation of the rod 15 does not affect the fork 16, but through the screwed muff 17 keyed to the rod and the sleeve 21 the fork 22 is displaced, thereby adjusting the clutch 12. The rod 15 carries at the end remote from the lever 13 a piston 24 slidable in a sleeve 23: this sleeve with a cover 30 is ad. justably secured to the cover plate 19 by a gripping flange 32. The sleeve has a slot 27 Fig. 4, along its length and the cover has grooves 29, parallel to the slot.. A spring pin 26 carried in the piston 24 passes through the slot 27 and with the grooves 29 acts as a lock to the control lever. There may be sets of grooves 29 to allow for replacement after wear. At each change of gear the lever passes through a neutral position. The gear-wheels &c. are contained in an extension at the side of the crank casing 14, the cover plate 19 carrying the side bearings; the plate clutch 2 is within an extra casing 42. By removal of the casing 42 the plate clutch can be dismounted.
