Variable - speed gearing of the kind in which the changes are effected by moving a single dog clutch member as described in Specification 21109/14 is modified to provide three speeds. This member or sleeve P, Fig. 1, has internal dogs at one end constantly engaging splines on a driven sleeve C, and like dogs at the other end adapted to mesh with clutch dogs B<1>, E<2>, D<1> alternatively to effect the three speeds. The dogs B<1> are direct on driving-shaft A to which is secured a pinion F driving constantly a set of three gears M, L, K loose upon a fixed lay shaft O. The dogs E<2> are upon a sleeve E<1> to which is secured gear E driven from the gear L. The dogs D<1> are carried by a wheel D driven from the pinion K and supported on the sleeve E<1>. The member P is operated by a fork Q extending from a sleeve R sliding on the shaft O. Locking may be effected by an internal dog S acted on directly by a spring T, Fig. 1, and engaging notches O<1> in the shaft O. The dog S may have an inclined end Y, Fig. 2, engaged by a like end on a perpendicular spring-pressed rod V. Control is effected by way of a rock shaft W, which may alternatively carry the locking-means. A kick-starter may be combined as described in Specification 12295/15.
