Abstract

261,488. Wolseley Motors, Ltd., and Boden, O. Aug. 29, 1925. Facilitating changing speed. - Relates to change-speed gearing for vehicles of the kind in which changes are effected by sliding toothed wheels into mesh and in which such changes. are facilitated by the use of auxiliary gearing to speed up the wheels about to be unmeshed. The clutching of the respection wheels of the auxiliary train such as G, K is effected by means which are struck or directly moved by the main gear such as C about to be unmeshed. Thus A is the driven shaft of the gearing which can be clutched to an aligned driving-shaft, not shown, or driven at reduced speeds through gears such as D fixed on a lay shaft B. When the splined gear C is tthrust towards its mating gear D, it strikes directly the inclined ends n of the rods N which pass through intervening mechanism E and abut against a splined friction cone H. The loose gear G of the auxiliary train is gripped between the cone H and a dog-faced disc M, Fig. 4, fast upon an extension b of the shaft A. The engine clutch being disengaged, the lay shaft is then driven through the pair G, K so as to bring the speed of the teeth of gear D to the proper speed to be picked up by the gear C without shock. Further displacement of the gear C causes it to ride freely over the ends of the rods N, which are pressed inwards against springs Q. Like provision may be made for the engagement of gears for other speeds.
