Abstract

154,694. Faire, J. H. C. Aug. 30, 1919. Variable-speed gearing; clutches. - Gearing for motor-vehicles having two principal speeds is combined with auxiliary clutch gearing, so that each principal speed can be reduced by the act of pressing .down a pedal. This facilitates dealing with a turn and with a hill simultaneously. The main clutch comprises a disk 6 feathered on a. shaft 7 and adapted to be pressed against the inside face of a driving fly-wheel 2 by a ring 19, which is normally held in operative position by spring plungers 20 on the fly-wheel A sleeve 5 carrying a cone member 3 of the auxiliary clutch has a groove 24 engaging the ends of levers 22 pivoted upon the ring 19 and upon the flywheel. The principal speeds are from the flywheel through the main clutch to the shaft 7, upon which slides a combined gear 27 and clutch member 26. The first principal speed is a direct drive effected by engaging the member 26 with a member 30 carried by the driven shaft 32. The second principal speed is effected by sliding the gear 27 into mesh with a gear 35 secured to a sleeve 36, which turns loosely on a fixed spindle 17. The drive passes through the pair 27, 35, and through another pair 37, 31. The other member 4 of the auxiliary clutch is connected by a sleeve 12 passing into the gear-box 8 to a pinion 15. The pinion 15 is connected to the shaft 7 through a reducing-train 16, 33, 34. When either principal speed is in action and a pedal is depressed, the sleeve 5 is slid to the right, so as to disconnect the main clutch and engage the auxiliary clutch, the reducing-train becoming operative. An idler 38 is provided for reversed driving.
