Variable-speed and reversing ratchet gearing comprises a driving-shaft 1, Fig. 1, adapted to be clutched directly to an aligned driven shaft 2 or to drive that shaft through variable-throw eccentrics 36, 37, 38, ratchet clutches 13 - - 18, and a pair of countershafts 10, 11. The shafts 10, 11 drive through toothed gears 67, 68 a gear 66 slidable upon a sleeve 65 loose on the shaft 2. The eccentrics are revolubly connected to a disc 50 secured to a clutch drum 55. A clutch head 59 fast on the shaft 2 is adapted to be engaged by a clutch 64 slidable on the sleeve 65, and by a clutch 61 upon a sleeve 58, which also carries a friction clutch member 56, Fig. 6, adapted to engage the drum 55. When the clutches 64. 61 are moved to the right, the shafts 1, 2 are clutched together, and the eccentrics and toothed gearing are at rest. When these clutches are moved to the position shown in Figs. 1 and 6, the eccentrics are driven through the drum 55, and the drive passes to the shaft 2 through the gear 66. Reversed driving is effected by sliding the gear 66 to the right so as to be connected to gears 72,73 through idlers 70, 71. The ratchet clutches are of the friction-ball type. The eccentrics are operated in unison to change the speed by a toothed sleeve 42, Figs. 6 and 17, which is turned about the shaft by differential epicyclic trains actuated by a lever 54.
