Abstract

257,973. Caton, C. H. May 12, 1925. Variable-speed gearing yielding two speeds in each of two directions comprises three pairs of toothed gears 4, 16 and 6, 15 and 8, 18, Fig. 1, in constant mesh and a seventh gear 17 which is enmeshed for reversal drives only. The gears 4, 8 are fast on driving and lay shafts 2, 5, respectively. The gears 6, 17 are splined on lay and driver shafts 5, 10, respectively. The gears 15, 16 are loose on the driver shaft. For forward speeds, the pairs 4, 16 and 6, 15 are alone operative respectively. For low speed, the gears 16, 17 are slid into clutch engagement with gear 15 so as to connect gear 16 with shaft 10. For high speed, gears 6 and 17 are slid into clutch engagement so that gear 6 is driven and gear 15 is connected to its shaft. For each reversed drive, the train 8, 18, 17 is operative. On one speed, the shaft 5 is driven directly through clutch 7. On the other speed, the shaft 5 is driven through train 4, 16, 15, 6 by clutching loose gears 15, 16 together. The gearing is suitable for motor-vehicles, and the control shown in Figs. 3 and 4 is adapted so that the track or path extends to right and left of the driver. A control lever 20 for forward speeds serves to rock a quadrant 26 which has two teeth engaging notches in striker sleeves 27, 28 which slide on a guide 29. Pointed spring plungers 37, 38 hold one sleeve fast when the other is being actuated. A lever 21 for reversed driving controls the gear 17 through a sliding striker 35.
