Abstract
349,271. Variable-speed gearing; claw clutches. DAIMLER-BENZ AKT.- GES., Untert³rkheim, Stuttgart, Germany. May 5, 1930, No. 13816. Convention date, May 3, 1929. [Class 80 (ii).] In change-speed gearing for motor vehicles two dog clutch members n, k are provided which are connected by a third member p operatively connected to a gear-changing lever s to allow relative sliding, motion of the clutch members, compression springs q, r being interposed between the third member and the clutch members and the arrangement being such that the clutches n, o ; k, l are engaged under spring pressure and positively disengaged by the member p. The end faces of the dog clutch teeth are bevelled to permit overrunning when the speeds of the engaging clutch members are unequal. In the application to a four-speed gear box comprising driving and driven shafts a, m and a lay shaft d driven through constantly meshed gears b, c, first and second speeds are obtained by engaging the gears e, h and f, i respectively, third speed is obtained by clutching the gear l<1> to the shaft m through the clutch k, l and fourth speed or direct drive is obtained by clutching the gear b to the shaft m through the clutch n, o. The sleeve p which connects the clutch members n, k is operated from the gear lever s through a slider or bar t, of which a notched portion u co-operates with a detent so as to hold the member t in the operative positions.
