Abstract

451,360. Claw - clutches ; variablespeed gearing. MOLDENHAUER, E., 58, Charlottenstrasse, Dusseldorf, Germany. Feb. 4, 1935, No. 3621. [Class 80 (ii)] The end faces of the co-operating claws 5, 7, Fig. 1, of a claw-clutch, used in the variable-speed gear of a motor-vehicle, are uniformly inclined so that engagement cannot occur if the driven part is overrunning, the movable clutch member 3 being connected with its associated shaft 11 by projections 22 on the former engaging grooves 2 in the latter, which grooves and projections have inclined parts 23 and 24 such that the driving torque tends to engage the clutch. An auxiliary sleeve 12, splined on the member 3 (or on the fixed clutch member 9), and operated by the brake mechanism of the vehicle, has claws 13 engageable with claws 21 on the member 9 (or on the member 3), the end faces of these claws 13, 21 being inclined oppositely to the claws 5, 7, so that, when the driven part is overrunning, the claws 13, 21 engage upon actuation of the brake and the claws 5, 7 can then engage. The movable member 3 is common to two claw clutches, the second clutch being similar or being of ordinary construction ; in the former case, two auxiliary brake-actuated sleeves are provided and the projections 22 and grooves 2 have doubly-inclined parts as shown at 90, 91 in Fig. 9, wherein two double-ended claw sleeves 77, 78 are arranged on the driven shaft 82. A gear 69 is fast on the driving shaft 81, gears 71, 73, 75 are loose on the shaft 82, and constantly-meshed countershaft gears 70, 72, 74, 76 normally rotate together. A claw clutch 36 is, however, provided whereby the gear 76 can be disconnected from the other countershaft gears, whereupon a reversing train (not shown), can be brought into action. The three brake-actuated auxiliary claw sleeves 87, 88, 89 are controlled by a longitudinally-movable rod 38, Fig. 10, linked to the brake pedal 61 through the intermediary of a spring 63, while the pedal 67 controlling the engine clutch 60 has a hooked member 66 which operates to prevent actuation of the rod 38 except when the pedal 67 is depressed to disengage the engine clutch. Specifications 383,827 (as open to inspection under Sect. 91) and 397,321 are referred to.
