Abstract
427,856. Variable-speed gearing. JONSSON, G. E., Huddinge, Sweden. July 23, 1934, No. 21497. [Class 80 (ii)] An automatic change-speed gear for motor vehicles and other purposes including a centrifugal clutch 4 which engages at a predetermined speed and one or more uni-directional clutches 8, 8 to permit the lagging behind of the gear or gears not transmitting power, has a manually-operable friction clutch 4 adapted to perform a change from the gear of lowest order to the gear of the next highest order. The friction clutches 5, 4 are operable by levers 7, 7 respectively under the control of a common member such as the ordinary clutch pedal, the release of which allows first the clutch 5 and afterwards the clutch 4 to engage. The plate clutch 5 and the centrifugal clutch 4 have a common member x connected to the first-motion sleeve 9. In operation, when a clutch member 17 splined on the driven shaft 2 has been moved by the gear lever into engagement with the free-wheel roller clutch 8, and the clutch pedal partly released, the clutch 5 is engaged and the first speed operates through gears 10, 13, 15, 12. The complete release of the clutch pedal causes the engagement of a plate clutch 4, the second speed being taken up through gears 10, 13, 14, 11 and the clutch 8 overrunning. A further increase in speed of the driven shaft causes the centrifugal clutch 4 directly connecting the driving and driven shafts to engage automatically. Backward movement of the member 17, which is constructed as a gear wheel brings in the reverse drive.
