483,069. Variable-speed gearing. SOC. ANON. DE RECTIFICATION & D'ENGRENAGES PROCEDES MINERVA. July 6, 1936, Nos. 18714 and 18715. Void. Convention dates, July 5, 1935 and July 2, 1936. [Class 80 (ii)] A variable-speed gearing comprises a driving shaft 1, a driven shaft 20, and auxiliary shafts 9 and 10 driven from the driving shaft 1 through clutches 5, 7 and 6, 8 and carrying looselymounted gears 11, 13 and 12, 14 engaging with fixed gears 21 and 22 on the driven shaft 20. Either of the gears 11, 13 or 12, 14 are adapted to be clutched to their respective shafts by 'means of clutch sleeves 15 or 16 to provide different gear ratios and the auxiliary shaft which takes the drive is determined by the engagement of either of the clutches 5, 7 and 6, 8. Normally one of these clutches is engaged and the other disengaged so that the next gear can be selected and clutched to the inoperative auxiliary shaft and the clutches 5, 7 and 6, 8 then reversed by means of a lever 23 to make the change without any substantial interruption of the drive. Free-wheel devices may be provided between the shafts 9 and 10 and the clutches 5, 7 and 6, 8, which latter are then operated separately, to ensure on a change of gear that the drive through one auxiliary shaft is fully maintained until the other shaft takes up the drive. The clutches 5, 7 and 6, 8-and the clutch sleeves 15 and 16 may be operated by servomotors under the control of a single electric switch so that on movement of the switch to various positions the sequence of operations required for the selected gear change are carried out automatically. The gearing may be further automatically controlled by the speed of the engine or vehicle, or the resistance or torque.
