Abstract

298,186. Maybach-Motorenbau Ges. Oct. 5, 1927, [Convention date]. Variable-speed gearing comprises a two-speed gear with a pair of claw clutches the end faces of the teeth being bevelled to produce a catchup or speed equalizing effect before positive engagement. Thus in Fig. 3, the teeth of elements 3, 6 are pressed together by a spring such as 9, Fig. 1, and as long as 6 moves faster than 3, there is resistance to the relative. motion. Whenever 3 moves the faster in the direction of the arrows, Fig. 2, the teeth snap into engagement. The double clutch 3, Fig. 1, is splined on driving-shaft 1 and a one-to-one drive is effected when the elements 3, 6 engage. An overdrive is effected through the gear train when elements 2, 3 engage. Both clutches are modified according to the invention, and lever 7 is biassed by a spring toggle to have no neutral position. This two-speed gear may be used as auxiliary to another change-speed gear of the same or of a different type. The taper end faces on one clutch member may be replaced by rollers.
