Clutches, claw; facilitating changing speed. - In claw clutches having means, operative in either direction of relative rotation, for preventing engagement except on synchronism, particularly for use in constant-mesh change-speed gears or in conjunction with gear-boxes on motor vehicles to facilitate speed-changing, the driving- member a carries in a recess f a coned friction ring g, one wall of the recess being formed by the conical surface k of a plate k<1>, and pawls h pivoted on the ring g, are adapted to pass through gaps m between pairs of lugs o on the slidable driven member c, except when lack of synchronism between the disengaged members a, c causes them to be tilted to one side or the other by the drag on the ring g and so to engage notches n, n<1> in the lugs o. Manual or automatic operating-gear acts on a groove e in the member c, the thrust being transmitted through the pawls to augment the friction on the ring g, which thus acts to accelerate synchronism. The friction effect may also be varied by using materials of different coefficients of friction.
