Abstract
630,816. Claw and friction clutches. STANDARD MOTOR CO., Ltd., GRINHAM, E. G., and WEBSTER, H. G. Aug. 12, 1947, No. 22342. [Class 80 (ii)] Syncromesh clutches in motor vehicle change-speed gearing have axially-extending thrust and balking pins 28, Fig. 1, loosely located in bores 27 in the movable positive clutch member 20 and biased outwardly therein by centrifugal action, preferably assisted by spring means 35, to transmit thrust, through shouldered heads 29, from the member 20 to the movable synchronizing cone member 25 to engage the latter with its co-acting fixed member 24 and provide light initial balking of the member 20. The pins 28 have reduced ends, one 31 located as by a flange 34, and the other 30 working in a radial slot 32 in the member 25, which has limited circumferential play 21a, Fig. 4, relative to the shaft splines on which it and the member 20 slide, so that the drag consequent upon initial frictional engagement moves the pins circumferentially and wedges the heads 29 more firmly between the members 20, 25 to provide increased balking. Upon synchronism the drag balking ceases and the member 20 can be advanced to overcome the centrifugal balking and force the heads 29 to enter the bores 27, arcuate dogs 19 carried by the member 20 passing through corresponding slots 26, Fig. 4, in the member 25 and engaging dogs 18 on the fixed clutch member 12. As shown, the clutch is applied to a three-speed and reversing countershaft change-speed gear, the first-speed gear 12 being powered by a layshaft train and the member 20 being splined on the driven shaft 11 and being formed with a gear 22 meshing a reversing idler when the member 20 is moved to the right. In Fig. 2 (not shown) the invention is applied to the direct-drive and second-speed positive double clutch of this gear, each thrust pin being symmetrically outwardly biased in the movable double clutch member by a longitudinally arranged bow spring and having at either end a balking head co-acting with the respective movable synchronizing cone member.
