Abstract

526,316. Positive clutches. BORG-WARNER CORPORATION. March 13, 1939, No. 8030. Convention date, March 14, 1938. [Class 80 (ii)] A positive clutch for use in change - speed gearing comprises an axially-movable sleeve 8 having internal teeth 9 which are engageable with teeth 10 on a driving gear 13 and which are splined on a member 14 which is itself splined on the driven shaft 7. The member 14, which carries a ring 19 provided with a conical friction surface 21, is initially carried forward with the sleeve 8 by means of a split spring ring 30 which is mounted in a groove 31 on the member 14 and which frictionally engages the teeth 9, so as to bring the surface 21 into engagement with a complementary surface 22 on the gear 13 for synchronising purposes. A projection 26 on the ring 19 engages with play in a recess 27 in the member 14 so as to allow limited rotation of the ring 19 relative to the member 14, and the ring 19 has chamfered balking teeth 34 which co-operate with the chamfered ends of the teeth 9 so as to prevent engagement of the teeth 9 with the teeth 10 until synchronism occurs. One or both of the friction faces 21 and 22 is or are formed with grooves 25 for breaking the oil film, these grooves being either longitudinal (as shown) or helical.
