Abstract

464,102. Positive clutches. BROWN & SONS (HUDDERSFIELD), Ltd., D., and MERRITT, H. E. Oct. 9, 1935, No. 27831. [Class 80 (ii)] In a claw clutch, for use in a gear-box, comprising an internally-toothed member b slidable axially on a driving-gear a or on a driving shaft into engagement with teeth d2 on a driven gear d, pins c slidable in axial holes b<1> in the member b engage at their larger ends in recesses in a friction cone e adapted to co-operate with a conical friction surface in the gear d. The pins are normally maintained in the position shown by a spring ring f carried by the member b and engaging grooves c<3> in the pins, and, in the disengaged position of the clutch, the smaller ends of the pins, which slide in reduced parts of the holes b<1>, abut against the gear a or against a disc fixed on the driving shaft. On attempting engagement, the cone e first engages the gear d and, due to the difference in speeds, the pins tilt so that their chamfered shoulders c<2> bear against the edges of the holes b<1> and thus prevent further movement of the member b. When synchronism is reached, however, the member b can be moved further, the ring f riding out of the grooves c<3>, so as to engage the claw clutch. The cone e has a spiral groove which serves to expel oil from between the friction surfaces.
