Abstract

458,213. Friction clutches ; variablespeed gearing. KESTERTON, H. M., Gase House, Wroxall, near Warwick. Dec. 20, 1935, No. 35296. [Class 80 (ii)] A friction clutch comprises barrel-shaped rollers d, the axes of which lie in a plane normal to the clutch axis, disposed between the interior surface of a driven (or driving) drum h and the polygonal outer surface of a driving (or driven) member e which is movable axially so as to enable the clutch to be disengaged. The rollers are mounted in a cage c which is rotatable on and slidable with the member e. The surfaces of the members e, h may be inclined to the axis of the clutch. To minimize shock, a split or segmental ring j, Figs. 3 and 4, formed with recesses to receive the rollers, may be arranged between the latter and the drum h. A changespeed gear employing a double clutch is shown in Fig. 5. A single set of caged rollers d is arranged between the polygonal surface f of a sleeve e and a pair of outer members h, h<1> having oppositely-inclined interior surfaces. The member h is integral with the driven shaft i, the member h<1> is integral with a sleeve q which is rotatable and slidable on the sleeve e and is geared to the shaft i through a countershaft t, and the sleeve e is splined to the driving shaft a. A carrier 3 on the sleeve e carries a centrifugal weight 4. The sleeve e is normally urged to the right by a spring 7 so as to produce direct drive by the engagement of the rollers with the member h. On the sleeve q being moved to the left, through an arm w, it abuts against the carrier 3 and moves the sleeve e to the left, thus disengaging the rollers from the member h. A plunger 5 in the sleeve e is now opposite a recess 6 in the shaft a. If the speed of the shaft a is above a predetermined limit, the weight 4 operates to depress the plunger 5, thereby locking the sleeve e. On now moving the sleeve q to the right, the member h<1> engages the rollers and the gearing is such that an overdrive is produced. When the speed falls, the sleeve e is released and moves to the right to restore direct drive.
