Abstract

805,441. Ratchet clutches. SINCLAIR, H. Aug. 31, 1955 [Sept. 7, 1954], No. 25956/54. Classes 80 (2) and 80 (3). In a one-way clutch of the kind wherein members 1 and 4 are positively clutched together by teeth 6, 10 on the member 4 and on a member 9 which is caused to move helically into and out of engagement with the member 4 along a helical spline 8 on the member 1 in accordance with the direction of relative rotation acting through pawls 11 pivoted on the member 9 and engaging the teeth 6, oil, controlled manually or automatically in accordance with the speed of the pawls or the overrun speed, is fed onto the tails or noses of the pawls to withdraw them out of contact with the teeth 6 to prevent wear on over-run. The oil may be applied selectively to the noses and tails to engage as well as disengage the pawls. As shown, oil fed radially inwards at C through passages 14, 15, 17, has a circumferential component B towards the pawls 11 which depends on the relative over-run speed of the member 4 in the direction A. Such oil overcomes the engaging springs 13 of the pawls, either centrifugally by accumulating in side or end grooves 19, ranks or holes with restricted escape holes in the pawl tails, or dynamically by impinging on curved under-surfaces on the pawl tails.
