535,038. Differential gearing; clutches. BENDIX, Ltd., and IRVING, J. S. Nov. 20, 1939, No. 30370. [Class 80 (ii)] In differential gearing of the controlled type in which the whole of the driving torque may be applied to one wheel axle, a clutch which is adapted to slip when a pre-determined driving torque is exceeded is incorporated in the drive between the differential gearing and the wheel. The clutch may be arranged at the outer end, or at the inner end of each shaft, or at an intermediate point. It may consist of a single or multi-plate spring-loaded friction clutch. As shown, the clutch has radial teeth 16, 19, with inclined side faces, which engage one another and are formed on a cover 13 on the wheel hub 10 and on a disc 18 fixed to the axle 17 respectively. Springs 20 urge the teeth into engagement. Should the torque exceed a predetermined amount the springs give and the teeth slide over one another, the resulting noise being an indication that. slipping is occurring. The springs 20 also bear on a sleeve 23 carrying studs 24 which slide in holes in the disc 18. The sleeve 23 engages a radial shoulder 22 on the wheel hub 10. The slipping of the clutch is also resisted by the friction occurring at the shoulder 22 ; this resistance can be increased by giving the parts 22 a conical form.
