Abstract

411,432. Friction clutches. HEALEY, F..J., Britannia Works, Bassein Park Road, Shepherd's Bush, London. Dec. 1, 1932, No. 34000. [Class 80 (ii).] In a friction clutch, groups of steel balls 16 arranged loosely in radial pockets 17 of a member 6 secured to the driving shaft 1 move outwards under centrifugal action to engage a driven drum 3 and then become wedged between the drum and bridge members 7 arranged within the pockets. Each member 17 is normally maintained by springs 9 with a ball 11 carried thereby in contact with a member 12 which slidably engages a keyway 6d in the hub of the member 6. Beneath each member 12 and arranged to move therewith is a member 13b having a wedge end co-operating with the wedge end of a member 13<a> secured in the keyway. The hook end 12b of each member 12 engages a groove in a slidable control collar 15. Thus, to increase the automatic clutching effect, the collar 15 may be moved so as, through the wedge action of the members 13<a> and 13b, to move the members 7 radially outwards. The balls 16 are inserted through a closable aperture 3f in the drum 3. According to the Provisional Specification, rollers may be used in place of balls.
