Abstract
697,297. Friction clutches. KREIS, F., and S.I.B.A. SOC. ITALIANA BREVETTI AUTOMOBILISTICI AR.L. Sept. 14, 1950 [March 6, 1950], No. 22616/50. Class 80 (ii). A clutch for automatically connecting a speed stage in a variable speed gear is engaged centrifugally and disengaged by torque responsive means. The centrifugal sector weights 1 are mounted on the driven half of the clutch which is rotated, prior to engagement of the clutch, from the driven end of the gear. The clutch driving shaft 9 carries clutch plates 7 engaged by plates on a clutch half 5 which is axially moved by inclined surfaces on the weights 1. The weights are retained by a tie spring and are mounted on bolts 13 which engage recesses 15, 16, Fig. 4, in relatively rotatable overlapping discs 2, 3 and thereby rotatively couple the two discs. The disc 2 is secured to the driven shaft 4 while the overlapping disc 3 is slidably connected to the clutch half 5. At low speeds the tie spring holds the bolts 13 fully in the recesses 15 and as the speed of the shaft 4 increases the bolts 13 are centrifugally moved out of the recesses 15 to the position shown in Fig. 4 and the clutch is engaged. Should the torque exceed a predetermined amount, however, the discs 2, 3 undergo a slight relative rotation and the bolts 13 are forced back into the recesses 15, thereby disengaging the clutch.
