Abstract

718,263. Combined fluid coupling and friction clutch. NORTHERN GENERAL TRANSPORT CO., Ltd. July 31, 1951 [Oct. 18, 1950], No. 25369/50. Class 80 (2) [Also in Group XXIX] A power transmission mechanism comprises a fluid coupling and a centrifugally-actuated friction clutch arranged in parallel between a driving member 1 and driven shaft 8. The .driving parts 13, 14, of the friction clutch are fixed to the driving part 3 of the fluid coupling. Balls 25 guided by radial grooves 15 engage a conical face 19 on the clutch pressure plate 17. An annular stop 26 prevents the balls from moving too far radially inwards. At low speeds the friction-clutch is held disengaged by springs (not shown), the torque being transmitted to the shaft 8 through the driven member 10 of the fluid coupling. As the speed of the driving member 1 increases the balls 25 move radially outwards and the friction clutch transmits more and more of the torque until finally the whole of the torque is transmitted by the friction clutch.
