Abstract

574,589. Friction clutches. FREEBORN POWER CONVERTERS; Ltd., FREEBORN, J. E., DEGENHARDT, W. R., and FRAINE, A. F. DE. Jan. 28, 1944, No. 1649. [Class 80 (ii)] A friction coupling having one or more discs 21, or sets of discs, mounted to rotate freely on one of the coupling members so that a portion only of each disc is in engagement with the other coupling member, is characterised in that the axes of the two coupling members are out-of-line. As shown, sets of discs 21 are mounted by ball bearings 22 on pins carried by a plate 19 on a driven shaft 8. The discs 21 engage clutch plates 12 and abutment and pressure plates 15, 14, carried by a member 11 on the driving shaft 4. The axes AB, CD, of the shafts 4, 8, are out-of-line. Springs 17 press the friction members together. Thus there is always sliding between the friction members and static friction is avoided. Instead of by springs, the presser plate may be actuated by centrifugal weights. Pedal means may be used to disengage the clutch. Specification 426,407 is referred to.
