[Class 69 (ii)] [Also in Group XXVI] A hydraulic clutch comprises driving and driven plates dividing a body of liquid, the differing centrifugal forces set up in the portions of liquid when the driving and driven shafts are rotating at different speeds serving to move the plates towards or away from each other. A spring may be provided tending to separate the plates. Plates 4, 5, Fig. 1, are slidably keyed in a flywheel 6 on opposite sides of a plate 11 on the driven shaft 2, a spring 10 being provided. Small apertures 12 allow a small circulation of liquid, and larger orifices 13 may be controlled by electromagnetically or otherwise operated valves 14. The plates may have grooves 11, Figs. 2 and 3, the surfaces between the grooves being slightly inclined. When the driven shaft attains a predetermined speed, centrifugal means may act to clutch it to the flywheel. A packing ring 23 is forced against the shaft 2 when the speed of the flywheel is low, by an annular member 24 with an inclined face contacting with inclined faces of members 25 acted on by springs 26 ; at high flywheel speeds, the members 25 are moved outwardly by centrifugal force.
