Abstract

809,101. Torque limiting couplings. SOC AUXILIAIRE D'INDUSTRIE (SADI) S.P.R.L. April 25, 1957 [July 13, 1956], No. 13174/57. Class 80 (2). A torque limiting clutch comprises balls between two plates, the plates having hemispherical sockets of radius equal to that of the balls. A driving shaft 1 has keyed thereto a flanged member 2 formed with a circular row of hemispherical sockets 4 joined by a circular ball race 3 of less axial depth than the sockets. The driven shaft 6 is rigid with a flanged member 5, to which is splined, at 8, a flange 7 carrying a casing 9 having hemispherical sockets 13 and a ball race 12 identical with those on the member 2. The casing 9 has secured thereto a cover 10 forming a housing abutment for springs 15 acting through a friction ring 17 to urge the member 2 and casing 9 together. The member 2 and casing 9 are formed with close-fitting flanges 20 and 19 respectively to provide pneumatic cushioning on re-engagement of the balls 14 in their sockets. A switch 18 may be provided to stop the driving motor on excess torque releasing the clutch. The sockets 4, 13 may be profiled to provide different characteristics of disengagement in opposite directions.
