Abstract
610,104. Universal joints; clutches. SELFPRIMING PUMP & ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., DAWSON, A. L. B., McKEAN, J. A., and CARDWELL, C. H. March 22, 1946, Nos. 8908, 13528 and 22562. [Class 80 (ii)] In a coupling device for allowing a limited amount of mis-alignment between two shafts, one shaft 1 enters with clearance a recess 6 in the other shaft 5 and is connected thereto by means of two or more radially disposed keys 7 floatingly supported in radial slots in the shaft 5 and engaging slots 2 in the shaft 1. The keys are made a loose fit in their slots to allow for relative movement of the two shafts and are urged inwardly by a spring ring 8. The slots in the shaft 1 may be of the form shown in Fig 4, so that a drive in one direction only can be effected as a ratchet clutch. To obviate the loose fit of the keys, the slots in one member may be formed by metal liners 32, Fig. 6, in rubber inserts 30 which give to allow relative displacement of the shafts.
