632,608. Universal joints. SCHWEIZERISCHE LOKOMOTIV-UND MASCHINENFABRIK. Aug. 26, 1947, No. 23527. Convention date, Nov. 26, 1946. [Class 80 (ii)j A universal joint between a shaft 3 and a gear wheel 2 comprises two sets of springs 21, 22 arranged in series, one set 21 being between lugs 16, 17 on the gear 2 and an intermediate member 20 and the other set 22 being between the member 20 and lugs 18, 19 on a member 15 secured to shaft 3. The intermediate member 20 comprises two side rings within side plates 6 of the gear 2 having projecting lugs 30-33 for co-operating with the spring plates 23-26 respectively. For transmitting torque in the direction of the arrow the lugs 16 engage spring plates 23 and the spring plates 24 engage the lugs 31 of the intermediate member 20. The lugs 32 of the member 20 engage the spring plates 25 and the spring plates 26 engage the lugs 19 of the driven member 15 on the shaft 3. Oscillation may be damped by the side plates of member 20 bearing against the side plates 6 of gear 2 and this friction may be increased by springs 37 and the use of friction linings. Lateral displacement of the gear and shaft is particularly allowed for.
