Abstract
758,383. Universal joints. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. Dec. 13, 1954 [Jan. 20, 1954], No. 1710/54. Class 80(2) A coupling of the Oldham type comprises a driving member 1 having dogs 4 received in between rollers 13, 14 on each side of diametrically opposed radial slots 9 in a "floating" ring 5 provided with further slots 9 and rollers 13, 14 receiving dogs 10a on a driven member 10. The arrangement is such that movement of the dogs 4, 10a along the slots 9 is accompanied only by rolling friction. The rollers 13 rotate on pins fixed in the ring 5 and the rollers 14 rotate on pins movable in slots in the ring, springs 15 biasing each pair of rollers 14 apart and into engagement with the dogs 4, 10a to take up backlash and wear in the coupling. The ring member 5, which consists of two plates 7, 8, is held loosely on the driving member 3 by screws 11 so that the driven member 10 can be withdrawn axially therefrom.
