439,210. Yielding couplings. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., 28, Kingsway, London, and BINNEY, E. A., Shirley, Ilkley, Yorkshire. July 23, 1934, Nos. 21453 and 21454. [Class 80 (ii)] The torque-load is shared by a number of separate units, each comprising a rubber sleeve 7, 8, loaded in shear, and tightly compressed between inner and outer rigid cylindrical members 9, 10 and 11, 12, with which they may have toothed or frictional engagement. In Fig. 1, concentric rubber sleeves 7, 8 transmit torque from a cup-shaped driving member 1, 2, to an interposed cylindrical driven member 6. The outer rigid sleeves 10, 12 are a tight fit in the members 6, 1 respectively, whilst the inner rigid sleeves 9, 11 are axially adjustable by nuts 13, 14 along tapers, so as to vary the compression of the rubber sleeves. Crowned bearing surfaces 17 maintain alignment and loosely interfitting teeth 19 limit the possible yield. In Figs. 3 and 4, rubber sleeves 26 are secured to pins 25, fixed in a driven casing 24, and are loaded in shear by engagement of teeth, on the periphery of their outer cylindrical members 27, with a driving pinion 20. Projections 32 limit the possible shear strain. Journal and end-thrust bearings 29, 30 respectively locate the driven casing 24 on the driving pinion 20.
