Abstract
751,383. Universal joints. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. Feb. 15, 1955 [Feb. 16, 1954], No. 4518/54. Class 80(2) [Also in Groups XXX and XXXV] A driving arrangement for individually driven rollers comprises an electric motor driving a roller through a flexible coupling situated within a cavity of one end of the roller shaft. Fig. 2 shows a gear coupling between the motor shaft extension 25 and the roller drivenend shaft 11, the coupling being accommodated within an axially extending cavity 22 formed in the shaft 11 and located approximately symmetrically about the centre of the nearby bearing 13. The gear wheels 23, 26 which are rigidly locked to the shafts 11, 25 respectively, permit relative axial movement of the said shafts. Instead of gear coupling, an annulus of resilient material may be used and the annulus may either be bonded at its inner and outer periphery or at its opposite flat surfaces to the members to be coupled as in Figs. 3, 4 (not shown).
