Abstract

594,850. Universal joints. WINGQUIST, S. G. July 2, 1945, No. 16813. Convention date, July 4, 1944. [Class 80(ii)] In a Hooke's joint of the type having a single centre of deflection, the driving and driven members 1, 2, have arms 3 provided with races 4 between which are interposed rollers 5 for transmitting motion between the joint members. A roll holder 12 is provided for the rollers and a bisecting member 6, 7 for the roll holder, which can slide therein, all forming a unitary assembly which as a whole may be inserted in and removed from the joint members. The bisecting member has spherical portions 9 resting in cylindrical seats 11 in the joint members 1, 2. The rollers may be conical, with collars 13 having outer spherical surfaces engaging the inside of the roll holder, or they may be cylindrical having grooves engaged by rings on the roll holder. The rollers at their outer ends have spherical surfaces engaging with the inner surface of a housing member 14 which holds the joint together. Assembly of the parts is made by movement in an axial direction.
