Abstract

873,162. Universal joints. RZEPPA, A. H. Aug. 25, 1959, No. 29005/59. Class 80 (2). A constant velocity ratio universal joint comprises inner and outer races 10, 12 having part-sperical surfaces 17, 23 in sliding engagement with each other, axial grooves 24, 28 in the races containing rollers 32. Two separate surfaces 80, 84 of curved cross-section are formed on each roller 32, these surfaces having greater radii of curvature than the radius of curvature of the roller. The co-operating surfaces 26, 30 of the grooves 24, 28 are plane. The arrangement is such that the torque which can be transmitted by a universal joint according to the invention is greater than can be transmitted by a joint of similar dimensions and type having balls, instead of the rollers 32, arranged between the two races. As shown, each roller 32 is guided by a pin 40 having part-spherical ends engaging in notches 48, 50 in the inner and outer races, screws 56 preventing the pins from falling radially outwards of the joint. The inner race 10 is splined to receive a shaft 16, and the outer race 12 is connected by bolts to a shaft 18.
