Abstract

927,120. Universal joints; securing race elements on shafts. DANA CORPORATION. May 29, 1961 [May 31, 1960], No. 19393/61. Class 80 (2). A universal joint assembly comprises two constant velocity ratio joints 12, 14 each having substantially axially grooved inner and outer races 32, 34 connected by torque transmitting balls 28 retained in position by cages 26, the outer races being formed at the ends of a onepiece tube 10 and separated by a web portion 50 thereof. The centres of curvature 38, 40 of the outer and inner ball grooves in the plane of each joint lie on opposite sides of the centre of curvature 36 of frusto-spherical surfaces on the cage 26 and the races, which slide over each other. A shaft 20 is splined for axial movement in the inner race 32 of the joint 12. A shaft 20<SP>1</SP> has splined engagement with the inner race 16<SP>1</SP> of the joint 14, and is prevented from moving axially away from a shoulder 48 on the shaft by a washer 44 and a snap ring 46. Covers 55 are fitted at each end of the tube 10.
