Abstract
377,761. Universal joints. LJUNGSTRÍM, B., 83, Linnegatan, Stockholm. May 4, 1931, No. 13157. Convention date, March 9. [Class 80 (ii).] A constant velocity-ratio double universal joint which permits relative axial movement and may be used for driving motor-vehicle steering wheels, comprises two rows of drivetransmitting caged balls 9 engaging axial grooves 8 in sleeves 3, 4 splined to the shafts and in a common intermediate sleeve 13 maintained equally inclined to the shafts by tubular members 18 carried in the shaft ends and having tongued ends 20, 21 embracing a common ball 22 against which they are pressed by equally strong springs 19 bearing against necks near their ends. The springs 19 also ensure that the separate joints only partake of half the total relative axial movement. Axial movement of the balls in the slots 8 is limited by split rings 11, 12 sprung into grooves in the sleeves 3, 4 ; of the balls in the sleeve 13 by split spring rings 15 and screwed on end flanges 16 ; and of the sleeves 3, 4 on the shafts by spring rings 7. In order to obtain uniform stress, the intermediate sleeve 13 is thin and radially resilient. The joint is enclosed in an oiltight leather bellows 23, Fig. 6, secured by wire 24 to flanged rings 25 mounted on the shafts. The shaft ends may engage and centre each other directly instead of through the tubular members 18.
